Character Development Exercise

As part of our research we had to create a character based on a prompt sheet we where given at the end of last weeks seminar. Mine read

“The next sound you hear and what caused it”

At first I had a lot of difficult trying to come up with a character on very little information. Me and a fellow student Heather Kelland, went on a long walk where we just bounced ideas of each other which was great as we both started to think about our characters and constructing a narrative around them. However I still wasn’t happy with the character I created, a boring bar tender who hears the sound of high heels and instantly falls in love.  It wasn’t until I had a late night phone call where I came up with an idea that was original and what I thought would make a good short story.

My character is called Lucy, a 27-year-old junior lawyer who has neglected everything including her family to achieve her academic goals of becoming a lawyer. Its not until she gets phone call late one evening of her drunken father that things quick change as her dad goes to explain that her mum died last week. Lucy heads back home out of rage more then anything else to confront her drunk of a father but on arrival her curiosity is peaked when she finds out they is a lock on her mums bedroom… The curiosity more then anything makes Lucy stay, as she’s not normally a kind-hearted person.

At this moment in time I’m not too sure how the story is going to end, as it is something that I need to develop further.

Name… Lucy
Age… 27
Something they want…  to see what’s behind the lock door

A reason why they cant have it… dad has put a lock on the door after her mum has died
